The Spearhead – a tribute to Bill & Bryan Siebrits and Vixen no. 130

May 20, 2015

One of the most successful Knysna Spearheads in the 1960’s was “Vixen no. 130” sailed by Bill and Bryan Siebrits.  “Vixen no. 130” came 2nd to Dave Denley in a very competitive fleet in the 1964 National Regatta at Saldanha Bay. I remember sailing “Con Brio” and dicing with Colin Mathieson in “Anitra” just behind them!

Bill, who was in his 50’s at the time, went on to win the National Spearhead class in 1966, also at Saldanha Bay.

”Vixen” was built by Bobby Bongers of Zeekoevlei.

image001aaAttached is a pic of “Vixen” sailed by Bryan Siebrits at Zeekoe Vlei when he moved down to Cape Town in 1965 to study Engineering. His dad, Bill, used to own the Pop Inn Cafe in Knysna and was a loveable character and very good helmsman whom I think started sailing relatively late in life.

Bryan, who was a very good friend of mine, pursued a succesful engineering career before returning to Knysna to run a Property Development company with his brother Erroll . He emigrated to the UK with his family and sadly passed away last year . Although they represented G L Y C, they were very much Knysna people .

Best Regards,Brian Hallock.

Thank you to Brian Hallock for this tribute.
